I use the Lawnstar liquid iron in the spring for a quicker green up from winter. I also apply it in the fall because it helps maintain some greenness even in the cold winter months in Northern Utah.

Usage Instructions

You should expect to see results within 48—72 hours after application. Maintenance applications are usually repeated on a monthly basis (or once the color begins to fade).

Correction rates are usually only applied once (as the initial treatment), or if there is a severe soil deficiency which requires the higher rates.

Liquid Iron products can severely stain concrete, clothing, and other surfaces. Wear gloves and apply with caution.

Iron deficiency can be a symptom of high pH soil media. If yellowing persists, or returns quickly following treatment with LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron, soil pH should be checked and corrected.

For Lawns and Turf

Iron Deficiency Correction: Mix 4 to 8 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per 1,000 sq. ft. Premix at a rate of 2oz per gallon of water.

Maintenance: Mix 1.5 to 3 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per 1,000 sq. ft. Premix at a rate of 2oz per gallon of water.

For Ornamentals

Iron Deficiency Correction: Mix 0.5 to 3 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per gallon of water. Apply generously, drenching foliage and surrounding root zone.

Maintenance: Mix 0.25 to 0.5 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per gallon of water. Apply generously, drenching foliage and surrounding root zone.

For Shrubs and Small Trees

Mix 0.6 to 1.2 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per gallon of water. Create a trench around shrub/small tree. Apply solution to trench until saturated.

For Large Trees

Mix 0.6 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per gallon of water. Dig holes 3 to 5 inches deep along the drip line of the tree. The larger diameter the tree, the more holes in soil required along drip line. Apply solution into the holes along the drip line until saturated.

Foliar Spray

Mix 0.6 oz. of LawnStar Chelated Liquid Iron per gallon of water. Apply a light mist over foliage of plants. Do not oversaturate. Apply product in the evening or on a cool cloudy day to reduce foliar burn.

An answer to that question
An answer to this question

Do your lawn, flowers, shrubs or trees show signs of yellowing?

If you can spot yellow leaves, they may be suffering from iron deficiency.

Lawns with a yellowish, mottled appearance may also be suffering from iron deficiency.

Iron is an essential nutrient that plants need to survive. Plants depend on it for use in numerous core processes, to name a few:

  • Chlorophyll production
  • Nitrogen fixation
  • Metabolism

You should already be able to see why without an adequate supply of iron, your plants aren’t able to perform vital functions properly…

Meaning: regardless of what you do or how hard you work, your lawn simply won’t be able to thrive.

How to spot the difference

As you may know, yellowing of plants can also signal nitrogen deficiency. There are a few subtle differences between iron and nitrogen deficiencies, but it’s important to avoid misdiagnosing the two. Treating an iron deficiency with nitrogen only makes things worse. There are a few tell-tale signs of iron deficiency. Remember these so you never misdiagnose again:

  • In iron deficient plants, leaves that turn yellow will often have green veins down the middle, as opposed to no green veins throughout the leaf in nitrogen deficient plants.
  • In iron deficient plants, younger leaves turn yellow, as opposed to older leaves turning yellow when they are nitrogen deficient.
  • In iron deficient lawns, the initial color change can take two forms:
  • In the beginning stage, it will take on a light green shade across the top surface. This usually occurs in different spots, not covering the entire lawn at first. It may look like somebody has sprayed the top ½ inch of grass with a lighter green.
  • In the later stages, when iron chlorosis really starts to set in, the younger leaves at the top of the grass become yellow, and that yellow starts working its way down each leaf blade.

If you’re still unsure whether your plants are suffering from iron deficiency or nitrogen deficiency, it may be a good idea to go and check now using the tips above. If you realise you actually have a nitrogen deficiency, LawnStar® 16-4-8 NPK is the perfect product for your needs. Click here to read more about LawnStar® 16-4-8 NPK…

But if it is iron chlorosis that is damaging your yard, you may want to keep reading…

Meet LawnStar® 6% Chelated Liquid Iron (CLI)

Chelated Liquid Iron is water soluble iron, supplied as a liquid that the plants in your yard can easily and effectively make use of.

Since our iron comes supplied as a liquid, LawnStar® CLI maintains a few unique benefits:

  • Application is quick and easy, the concentrate is mixed with water and spray solution can be applied with any garden sprayer
  • It works for all green plants in your yard: lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees
  • Low cost and energy efficient way to treat and maintain protection against iron chlorosis

But what causes iron deficiency in the first place?

It’s all in the soil! But not the soil itself, because typically soil contains plenty of iron. Various soil conditions prevent plants from making use of all that iron in the soil, such as:

  • High pH (alkaline) soil – this is the most common cause of iron chlorosis, frequently occurring at pH levels greater than 7.0
  • High phosphorus content in soil
  • High clay content in soil
  • Compacted soil

And unfortunately for you, abnormal soil conditions can be incredibly hard (if not impossible) to change, and difficult to manage at best.

Managing iron chlorosis with LawnStar® CLI

Here at LawnStar, we are constantly pushing boundaries. There are different grades of Iron for plants, ranging from the poorest (Grade E) to the highest quality (Grade A). It goes like this:

  • Grade E – Ferrous sulfate
  • Grade D – Iron EDTA Chelate, stable up to 6.0pH, 50% iron lost at 6.5pH
  • Grade C – Iron DTPA Chelate, stable up to 7.0pH, 50% iron lost at 7.5pH
  • Grade B – Iron EDDHA Chelate, stable up to 9.5pH
  • Grade A – Iron sugar-based Chelate, stable up to 9.5pH + most safe + most environmentally friendly

LawnStar® CLI utilises sodium glucoheptonate, a sugar-based chelating agent in lieu of EDTA or other traditional chelating agents, making for industry leading product safety and environmental friendliness, while ensuring peak stability up to a pH level of 9.5 (full stability in highly alkaline soils, the most common cause of iron chlorosis).

LawnStar® 6% CLI delivers a highly-bioavailable, safe, pH stable troop of iron direct to your plants core, delivering the nutrients needed for them to thrive.

The result? Uncompromised suitability and results for all homeowners.

It’s not your fault

It’s not your fault that some plants in your yard are suffering from iron deficiency. When it comes to soil conditions, there’s not much you can do without spending hundreds, if not thousands.

But that doesn’t mean you have to suffer.

LawnStar® Premium CLI is the all-in-one solution to yellowing lawns and shrubbery. Our 4-step process to bringing a deeper, greener vibrancy to plants couldn’t be more simple:

  1. Purchase a bottle of CLI
  2. Mix CLI concentrate with water, following the supplied guideline rates depending on your needs
  3. Spray lawn/foliars/shrubs/trees – whatever is suffering!
  4. Successfully treat and protect against future iron chlorosis
